If you are in your 40s, 50s,
or beyond:
Many women, as they approach menopause start drinking more. Similarly, Men can find themselves drinking more when testosterone lowers with age.
This can be caused by:
-
Stress: People in their 40s, 50s and beyond are often juggling a lot of responsibilities, such as raising children, caring for aging parents, and working full-time. This can lead to a lot of stress, which some women may turn to alcohol to cope with.
-
Menopause: Menopause can also lead to increased alcohol consumption in women. This is because menopause can cause a number of physical and emotional changes, such as hot flashes, mood swings, and fatigue. Alcohol can temporarily relieve some of these symptoms, which can make it tempting to drink more.
-
Socialization: Alcohol is often seen as a way to socialize and relax, so it's not surprising that women in their 40s and 50s may drink more when they're with friends or family.
-
Cultural factors: Alcohol consumption is more socially acceptable for women today than it was in the past. This means that women may feel more comfortable drinking in public and around others.
-
Genetics: Some women may be more predisposed to alcoholism than others. This is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Did you know?
There is some evidence to suggest that there may be a correlation between women in their 40s and 50s having lower estrogen and wanting to drink more alcohol.
Estrogen is a hormone that plays a role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. When estrogen levels decline during perimenopause and menopause, it can lead to changes in these areas, which can sometimes lead to increased alcohol consumption.
For example, one study found that women who were perimenopausal or menopausal and had lower estrogen levels were more likely to report drinking more alcohol than women with higher estrogen levels. Another study found that women who were perimenopausal or menopausal and had hot flashes were more likely to report drinking more alcohol than women who did not have hot flashes.
So bringing this awareness to your daily habits may help you reduce alcohol consumption and replace it with healthier habits.

What does alcohol do to men in their 40s, 50s and beyond?
While many men assume they can continue drinking with the same ease they did in their 20s or 30s, alcohol can take a mounting toll on the male body over time.
As testosterone levels naturally decline with age, alcohol can further disrupt hormonal balance, leading to reduced energy, libido, muscle mass, and motivation. It also impairs sleep quality, which is crucial for recovery and mental clarity—especially in midlife.
Over time, regular drinking increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, liver strain, weight gain around the midsection, and cognitive fog. For men seeking vitality, emotional resilience, and peak performance as they age, stepping back from alcohol—even temporarily—can be a profound act of self-leadership and renewal.
